Today was a little frantic in the morning, as we had to be down at the dock at 10:45 AM so we could board our boat that left at 11. This is because we booked a boat trip that would bring us to an active volcano and then to the Hot Springs that are right off the coast of that volcano. To get down to the dock, there were two ways: you could take the chairlift which Nana, Nana Andi and Kayla took, or you could take the 688 stairs which everyone else took. When we all got down to the dock we got ready and boarded the boat. It was very exciting, as it was our first boat tour of the trip. The views from the boat were amazing.
When we stopped at the active volcano site, three boats full of people got out of the boats and followed their own personal guide. Our boat was first to arrive when we got off it was about a kilometer walk to the active volcano site. We got told many interesting things about the history of volcanoes and earthquakes on Santorini and how it used to be called rounded because it was an island all together in a circle, and when a volcano erupted causing earthquakes it shifted into three different islands - one big U-shaped island, and two smaller islands broken off central to the big U-shaped island. We then got 30 minutes to walk around near the active volcano and look out to the ocean and islands surrounding us. You could also see the Hot Springs that we were going to go to next.
Active Volcano (there is steam coming out of the earth and you can smell the sulfur)
As we got back to the boat, we set up for the Hot Springs. Each person had to exit the boat by jumping into the water or buy a ladder.
The water was very cold. You had to swim quite a bit in order to get inside the actual Hot Spring area. Once inside, it got a little warmer, but not much. The tour guide said it was around 23°C or about 75°F. During the summer it can get around 38°C. After swimming in the Hot Springs for about 30 minutes we then got back on the boat and set off to go back. Once we docked and we all got out, Kayla, Nana, and Nana Andi all took the gondola ride back up. Mom, Dad and Gage all went up the stairs. Griffin and Connor decided to walk around the bottom area near the docks a little bit because it was very cool. After, they walked around, they then went up the stairs to meet everyone for some gelato. After we got gelato, we went back home. Everyone laid down for a quiet hour, except for Kayla and Griffin who walked around the city some more. They then went back to get some more food and water so they could head back out in an hour to view the sunset. Connor and Kayla went off to see the sunset and Griffin on his own to see the sunset as well. It was the most beautiful sunset we will probably ever see. I guess there's a reason why Santorini is known for their sunsets.
They then went home to get some dinner which consisted of pasta with pesto, tomatoes, and onions. It was very delicious. After Connor, Kayla, and Griffin were still a little hungry so they went out to get some gyros. They ate their second dinner on the sidewalk next to some other people who also had the same idea. When they got done, they decided to walk around a little more and then head home. The three of them then decided to go in the hot tub for a little bit, as people, one by one, settled into bed to go to sleep.
Thanks for tuning in!!!
Griffin
