Malaga: Day 1… or 2? (2/22/24)

To start off the morning, Mom went out to find the Aldi. (Pareto note: I actually started with a gorgeous sunrise hike/walk to from the Plaza de Merced in town to the Gibralforo lookout, which also took me past the castle.

There were such great views of the city, I decided to bring the rest of the troops back later in the day. Then I returned to our apartment to make my own delicious breakfast. We had planned on doing a group walk around town leaving at 9:30 or 10 am, but when I got back at 9 nobody else was even stirring, so I went to scout out the Aldi and another grocery store not too far away. I LOVE walking to the grocery store! )

Once she returned, everyone minus Griffin (who was still asleep), went out on a walk to the market, there was a bunch of seafood and stalls that sold seafood, we even saw a stall that had a massive swordfish head on display. The smell and dead fish made me very nauseous, so I couldn’t stay in there for long. (Parent note: this is a huge market in what looks like an old railway building, with maybe 75 vendors. Fish, meat, fruits, veggies, baked goods, and few little restaurants - and bustling with people. It was very fun to just look around, but a little overwhelming!)

We went home and got lunch and picked up griffin. We set out towards a little hike that would take us up to the castle. We didn’t plan to go into the castle because it was free to get into on Sundays. (Parent note: per my note from this morning, gorgeous views of the city, etc etc.). We went back down and split up, Mom, Griffin, and I went back to the apartment and stopped at a store on the way there. (Parent note: of course we did!). We got a few provisions then headed to the apartment. The rest of the troops returned shortly there after.

Mom and griffin decided to make a frozen paella for dinner, however when they opened the pack… there was no rice.

So they went to the store to buy some rice, then came back and cooked the paella, which turned out quite delicious.

Along with the paella, we made some mini pork chops and a few burgers for me, as I do not very much like paella. After dinner we jammed out to some music until we went to bed.

(Parent note: after the great sandwich rebellion of Sevilla, we have been more intentional about trying to cook different things. If we had a pasta rebellion, that might be the end of eating on the trip, so we tried to find non-pasta options. Our kitchen in this place is a little bigger than the micro-kitchen in Sevilla, and with more pots and pans, but only two working burners on the stove and no oven, so we are a little limited. We bought as many different kinds of frozen pre-made stir-fry type dishes as we could find; yesterday's dinner was one fabulous lo mein curry, a mediocre fried rice, and a fairly nasty mixed vegetable dish. Today we picked up a few different kinds of frozen paella, a frozen quinoa veggie mix, some interesting black rice with seafood, some burgers and some very thinly sliced pork chops. Much more success with todays's meals - except for not reading the package on one of the paella purchases as closely as we should have. But as Gage said, it was quick and easy to run to the store to grab rice, and all turned out well. Hopefully we will continue to be more adventurous when it comes to food - while also remembering to stock some simple meats and basics so the less adventurous among us don't go hungry! I think I went into at least 10 different grocery stores and markets in the last 24 hours, and bought something at maybe 8 of them. I love foreign grocery stores - it's just so fun to see all of the different foods and how similar foods have different flavors - like sausage and eggs flavored potato chips! )
