Off to a Flying Start (01/29/2024)

We started the day with an early morning and a delicious breakfast. Kayla gave Jen and Matt an incredible card to thank them for allowing her to come along on the trip.

Then Becky gave us all a ride to the airport where she proceeded to tell us all of the stories she knew about plains catching on fire. During the drive Griffin decided to light up the ride with happiness and serenade us with his amazing singing and dancing skills. (Connor who was sitting directly in front of Griffin was the most overjoyed by the performance).

Once we got to the airport, we started the process of checking our bags. In the process of doing this, two College Graduates, one soon to be High School graduate, and a High School Sophomore managed to mess up which tags went with each bag. Matt responded to this with a disappointed look but thankfully no Bitch Mints were handed out. After dropping off bags we proceeded to the very long lines to get through security. Jen, Griffin, and Gage all headed to TSA Pre-check while Matt, Connor, and Kayla want to the back of the very very very long line for standard security. In line Kayla proceeded to ask, “Are all of these people headed to Texas with us?” Luckily the airport security were using dogs so the lines went by rather quickly and Kayla was saved from any more embarrassing comments.

Our first flight of the day departed at 10:36 AM and we then landed in the DFW airport in Texas at 1:10 PM. We then had about 4 and a half hours to kill until our next flight. We decided to fill our time with the following:

  • Kayla and Griffin Decided to race up and down the airport stairs serval times (Kayla won and Griffin may have won every other time but who is counting)

  • Griffin found a children’s play area and proceeded to go down the blue slide several times (don’t worry he looks young enough so he didn’t get any strange looks)

  • Kayla, Griffin, Gage, and Connor found a mini lego store where Griffin proceeded to build a lego heart

  • Kayla and Griffin started a tally for how many Cowboy hats they saw (they needed to be on someones head in order to count). They were at 29 desperately trying to get to 30 and when they were about to board they were upheld with such joy when a guy walked right out of security with a pink feathered cowboy hat to make a total of 30.

  • We walked around the ginormous airport (Griff danced more than walked) and Kayla and Griffin also did some outstanding cartwheels through the hallways.

  • While walking Griffin got dared to run to the end of the hallway in 20 seconds

  • he did not make it and upon meeting up with the group, the two random strangers in front of us proceeded to roast him and said, “I have seen little girls run faster than that” which we all agreed with and laughed. (He was wearing slides and carrying 2 bags but excuses are excuses right)

  • We took the SkyRide around the airport twice and Kayla, Griffin, practiced their surfing as well as their balance which could definitely use some work.

  • Gage called his girlfriend Nolyn to tell her he loved her (awww so cute)

For lunch, we ate at Chick-fil-A (Jen, Gage, Griffin) and Subway (Kayla, Matt, and Connor). After lunch we walked around the airport some more before heading to our terminal and relaxing in the flight attendant sky lounge (Hopefully that was okay because nobody kicked us out). We then boarded our second flight at 5:45 PM and we are expected to land in Madrid, Spain at 9:00 AM local time (about 3:00 AM for Minnesota time on January 30th).

On the flight, they gave us dinner (chicken and rice or pasta with red sauce) which came along with a mini brownie, some crackers, a small edge of very delicious cheese, a mini salad and a dinner roll. Throughout the flight they gave us several refreshments and for one of the options they were handing out free wine. However, the flight attendant did not want to give Connor any because he doesn’t look old enough with his baby face. He then proceeded to tell her he was 22 which she did not believe but luckily Jen was there to save the day and vouch for Connor’s age. Jen did however make it clear that Griffin who was sitting in the middle seat was not old enough. However, someone (Definitely Mom and not Kayla) may have let him try a sip though and he reported it was very bad and will never drink again. He was then reminded by Kayla that any free alcohol was delicious. (This is “totally” just a joke so don’t arrest him for underage drinking)

Finally, we all tried to get some rest using the free pillow  and blanket provided by American Airlines (no this is not an add). Until tomorrow!

Signing off for the day - Kayla Daniel

(PS: I had to write this twice because it got deleted the first time. Airport WiFi SUCKS!!!)
