Sightseeing in Seville (02/19/2024)

Today was our first day in Seville, Spain. To start off the day, Jen was the first to wake up and was very kind and ran to the store to get us some provisions for breakfast and lunch. Everyone else (besides Griffin) woke up around 10:00 AM (Spain time) and got ready for the day. Once everyone (again except Griffin who was still sleeping) was ready we headed out into the city of Seville to explore. We saw several things along the way including amazing

architectural buildings, parks, and fountains.

Our first extravagant building was the Seville Cathedral which we all decided that was worth spending the money and taking a tour inside (which we have planned for tomorrow so stay tuned). The Cathedral is extremely intricate and so large that you can not get the whole building in a picture by just standing next to it or even standing 100 feet away.

At the Cathedral, Jen, Matt, and Gage got split up from Kayla and Connor due to the amount of people that were taking tours in of all of the history in Seville, Spain. Kayla and Connor's next stop for the day was the Teatro Lope de Vega. This building is the theater that is used by the University and had several students practicing outside throughout the day and into the night.

The next place we saw was an art gallery in this super unique and pristine building owned by a very rich person in Spain. The art gallery continued paintings of several ships and naval soldiers (which Connor thought were suppose to represent Conquistadors and Kayla thought were representing Christopher Columbus). While it was cool, we did not stay long because there was so much more to see.

While we were at the art gallery, Jen, Matt, and Gage had gone together to visit the University of Seville and had a wonderful time (but not too good of a time because they were missing the life of the party (Connor, Kayla, and Griffin who was still asleep at this point).

Our next stop of the day was the Plaza De España which we all (except Griffin) somehow managed to meet at without planning. At the Plaza De España, there was a free museum of the history of Spain's military which was very neat to see. Also, the museum had a Virtual Reality headset which gave you a 360 tour of the Plaza. However, the coolest thing within the Museum (at least to Kayla who is today's blogger) is that they had an ACTUAL ENIGMA MACHINE (which is a machine that decoded messages that were intercepted and helped end World War II almost two years early (definitely recommend watching the movie called "Intimidation Game" to learn more).

At this point, Kayla and Connor got split up from the group again because they wanted to stay and experience the free 360 virtual tour ass well and after exploring the Plasa for a little bit longer they decide it was time for lunch.

For lunch, they had split a top notch Sangria and a delicious seafood rice dish called Paella. Griffin at this point had woken up and joined Matt, Jen, and Gage at the Plaza and had gone out to eat somewhere else (but also coincidentally had tried the same Paella dish and enjoyed it).

(Parent note: this was actually an anti-sandwich rebellion. I don't eat bread at home, but have adopted the local culture on this trip and go buy a fresh loaf of bread pretty much every day. Which is soooo good! I'd be happy to have sandwiches with this bread every day.m, maybe even every meal. But the rest of the group ... not so much. Especially after sandwiches for dinner last night on the bus. So while I helpfully purchased fresh bread and meats and cheeses for a wonderful sandwich lunch, it turned out that NOBODY was going to eat another darn sandwich today. Kayle and Connor started the revolt by telling us they were going out for lunch. Griff and Gage were hangry and just wanted food immediately. Matt quickly became the leader of the coup and found a fabulous little restaurant where gage got a burger, and Matt, Jen and Griff shared paella, roasted fish, and Iberian steak. I'll admit, pretty darn good. Though I would still have been happy with a sandwich!!😊)

Finally, after lunch we had all found each other again and we went on a free tour of the Torre de Oro. At the tour, you could climb to the top and get an amazing view of the city of Seville.

After the tower, we all did an Aldi run to get food for dinner and for tomorrow. On the way home for the store we say the beginning of a parade of the Ambrosian Rite (which is the first Monday in lent and signifies the start of fasting).

Once we got back to the apartment, we made some delicious food and of course tried out the wine opener (which Connor had to learn how to use from his father and then proceed to sorta break a piece off but claims it was definitely broke before).

(Parent note: here is dinner, in the kitchen/dining room/living room/Griffin and Gage's bedroom:)

After dinner, everyone went for a walk and Kayla and Connor got a sneak peak of the Cathedral when they went to watch the ending of the Ambrosian Rite which was open to all.

They then went back to the Plaza de España and got trapped in the gardens. Luckily the security person was just locking the gate and was able to let them out so they did not have to spend the night in the gardens (Which close exactly at 10:00 PM even if you are still inside of them).

To end the night, Kayla and Connor went and relaxed by the river and enjoyed the gorgeous view. Stay tuned for tomorrow adventures.

Signing off
